Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 3D

The audience for this film will likely skew younger than either Coraline or Monsters vs Aliens, but all animation fans will enjoy Meatballs’ quirky humor and clever visuals. There aren’t many jump-out-at-you 3D effects, but the film doesn’t need them. There are burgers floating down from the sky, Flint’s amazingly detailed lab (with its Get Smart entry and Star Trek crossed... 

Monsters vs Aliens 3D

The use of 3D here is exceptional. There’s minimal use of the leaping- from-the-screen cliché, but it does appear once, to dramatic effect, in an early scene at an Antarctic observation station. Later, while Susan is trapped in the monster prison, there’s a startling sequence of the facility’s keeper, General W.R. Monger (who turns out to be much less of a cliché than... 

Coraline 3D

Coraline isn’t an obvious 3D tour-de-force. But as you become engrossed in the story, the 3D makes a progressively stronger impression. The 3D effects are subdued, but in a way, they are more effective in showing off 3D’s storytelling potential than the other animated 3D releases reviewed here. In fact, Coraline is so engrossing that its 3D on a relatively small HDTV more than compensates... 

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 3D

The 3D effects are super, from scenes featuring flying pterodactyls (sound at all familiar?) to a startling closing shot of Scrat popping out of the screen. In between, we get colorful rock-climbing raptors, a river of lava, and a great sequence where Buck tells of his first encounter with Rudy—likely with more than a few embellishments. 3D is also effectively used in the closing titles. 3D may...
